All for Slime + Slime for All

There’s a new viral Internet craft craze in town, just in time for summer, causing a glue shortage. Slime, a colorful paste made out of glue, borax, and food coloring, has consumed tweens and is causing liquid glue sales to skyrocket. Shelves of major retailers are being left empty as parents buy out stocks for crafts that can use up to 20 bottles a month.

For Millennials of a certain age, the word “slime” conjures up visuals of Nickelodeon’s liquid green goo dumped on unsuspecting celebrities. These craft-obsessed kids are creating slime of a much different consistency. Today’s slime is more similar to Gak or Flubber, popular rubbery toy concoctions sold in the 1990s.

Instagram, Youtube, and Pinterest are full of recipes, tutorials, and derivations on how to make the colorful craft. Accounts dedicated to slime videos are in abundance on Instagram, most of them run by teenage girls. Some accounts even sell their intricate slime creations directly through Instagram or on handicraft retailer, Etsy.

Because of this craze, liquid glue sales have been soaring since July 2016. Similar to the adult coloring book fad in 2015 that caused sales of colored pencils to skyrocket, stores are having a hard time keeping glue on shelves.

Whatever will kids think up next?

Shifting Preferences and Behaviors Pave the Way for Pet Parenthood

Over the last decade, there’s been a shift in households with children versus households with pets. Can you guess who’s winning? If you said “pets,” then you’re right. As consumers hold off on starting human families, they are more than ready for their family of pets.

There’s a lot of money on the table from pet parents eager to please, impacting the pet industry in a big way.  From premium pet food to spa services, today’s pet owners go to extreme lengths to make sure their babies are happy and healthy – but who’s pampering them?

We all know it’s not a 2-year-old toddler buying a Mother’s Day present and writing the card, so what’s stopping a pet from doing the same? Significant others and friends can get on board to recognize the special pet parents in their lives - with the help of retailers and manufacturers. CPG companies should capitalize on holiday spending for Mother’s day with pet-positioned products, promotion, Social Media and online presence, making pet parents feel special because, hey, #petparentsneedlovetoo.

Small-Budget Marketers Can Make a Big Splash During March Madness

2017 marked another record-breaking year for the NCAA and March Madness. Yes, TV ratings boasted historic growth, but it was digital and social platforms that achieved new excellence in this year’s tournament. NCAA March Madness Live (MML) generated a record-setting 4.4 Million live video streams for the Championship game, up 29% vs. 2016. Overall, MML netted an all-time best 98 million live video streams for the entire NCAA Tournament, up +33%. As digital live event coverage gains popularity, marketers must ensure they are getting the right amount of exposure across all media.

Traditionally, March Madness Live digital media advertising is bundled with TV ad packages, but not all TV advertisers get digital spots. Those that do are big-time NCAA Basketball Sponsors like GM, Coca-Cola, and AT&T. Smaller advertisers not able to purchase TV ad spots can often work around this by running digital banner ads that run alongside streaming video or on other sites dedicated to March Madness news and information.

As media consumption goes digital, opportunity exists for smaller budget CPGs  to capitalize on digital marketing efforts to reach audiences. With only ten companies making up nearly 40% of the entire tournament’s ad spend, smaller marketers must get creative in order to capture their share of voice.

Holding Ourselves Accountable After The Holidays

It’s no mystery that the holidays, while delightful, can wreak havoc on our bodies, our minds, our relationships, and our wallets.  After what seemed like an eternity of planning, loving, giving, receiving, partying, resting, buying, greeting, and gorging, we now find ourselves in January. The first month of the New Year. A fresh start. A new hope. The light at the end of a tunnel part of you wishes you could stay in forever. But you know you can’t go on like this.

You’ve been handed the chance to rid yourself of a two-month (or maybe 12-month?) reenactment of your freshman year in college, and it is time to do something about that one thing you’ve been putting off since the first time you said you were going to do it… It’s Resolution time.
