Unwrapping the 2016 Holiday Shopping Season

While the 2016 holiday shopping season saw a slow start, overall sales ended on a high note - outperforming last year by double-digits. The last minute push for sales resulted in a new shopping day (Super Saturday) taking center stage, overshadowing sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. As usual, the battle between brick and mortar and e-commerce continues, with online retailers gaining strength. However, the slow start may be indicative of a larger shift in spending as consumers have come to expect they can find a great deal any time of the year. The traditional holiday shopping season may be extending to incorporate an entire year of gift-buying opportunities. But let’s face it, there will always be those shopping procrastinators out on Christmas Eve searching for the perfect gift - and retailers and manufacturers better be there to help them find it.

Once the unofficial kick-off to all things holiday shopping, Black Friday now has some competition as shoppers shift from store visits to website visits. The long nights of line waiting and elbow shoving become a distant memory as shoppers increasingly turn to technology to make their shopping lists, check it twice, and add to cart. Online and traditional retailers look for ways to capitalize on this trend by focusing on online and mobile strategies to win with shoppers. As one of the most important seasons in retail, it’s imperative to understand what motivates today’s all-knowing and fickle shopper and to create engaging experiences in-store and online.
